Re: Useful Load

I talked with Don this morning (he is in London this week). He wants to hold onto the floats in case the plane does not sell as if that is the case, then He and I will again put it in the water this Spring as partners. If he gets someone really interested in the plane without the floats, he will let...

Re: Useful Load

That's it. I actually did not own it, but was partners (non-equity) with Don who does own it. Let me know if you want to know anything about the plane. My Avatar is actually of the Chief that I owned with Don for over 6 years. The Sedan was build by the same group at the same time and are painted th...

Re: Useful Load

I am on Straight Floats and have stripped everything that can cause weight. Less carpet and insulation, Bender Compact Radio and Transponder etc. All the Whistles and Frills add weight. My weight will not help being on floats. Makes a great two place airplane rather than a marginal one.

Re: Useful Load

Aeronca's like other aircraft and us as we age, seem to always gain weight. You can look at what the type certificate says, but I would suggest when you get the plane restored, you weigh it. We all tend to go over board in what we put in our little birds and it is very easy to go over legal weight. ...

Call Dick Bovey at Argyle Air Service / Argyle Airport, Argyle, New York. He may have something or know of something. He was the one that turned me on to the Champ you have before it was rebuilt.

Re: 1946 Chief Nav Lights???

On my 7CCM, I took the position that anything that was set up as temporary was legal, though I might not be 100 % correct. Though I did not remove everything after every flight, I could have easily done it. So, back when Radio Shack had yet to do bust for about the 5th time. I stopped into one and p...

Re: Champ seaplane door pictures

Jack, As you know I sent you pictures of mine. You just need to blow them up so you can see more detail than they show on your phone. I also sent you some pictures today of another one, done much the same way, but with the piston at the back rather than the front, a more substantial door opening arr...

Re: Seaplane door pictures

I have already sent him the 337 Richard. I am not near the plane and will not be for a while, but what he is looking for is close up pictures of the attachment points. Piston to Door, Piston to Airframe, Hinge on the door top and the latching mechanism.

Re: Another Chief Restoration

I was amazed when my Chief was built from ground up, how it was going to look finished starting with the same kind of jumble of tubes! Have fun and look forward to seeing another great Aeronca Chief.

Re: Champ Empty Weight help needed

My Seaplane Door mod, which allows the door to stay on, but swing up under the wing, had to be tested based on the added drag on the one side.

Re: Champ Empty Weight help needed

There have been a lot of Aluminum Frame / Plexiglass Covered doors made and installed. If you do and you have a friendly FSBO near by you might be able to get a 337 for it. That is how I got my Seaplane Door conversion got installed and legal. Still used the same door, but could be swing up and open...

American Champion Aircraft, ACA, also had a split Seaplane Door including clear panels, for Aeroncas / Citabrias.
