STC and SB needed for A65 to A75 conversion

Post by flychamp » Fri Mar 23, 2018 12:54

Need what it take for A65 to A75 conversion.
Engine is down for rebuild and this is an option I want to learn about
and whether it is worth the dollars and effort. would like the increase in ROC
but need to weigh the data.

thanks flychamp

I would give Bill Pancake or Don Swords a call. I think there is some kind of service letter rather than an STC. If I am not thinking about the wrong engine (C-75 to C-85?) it requires opening up the oil circulation holes, a prop change and a carburetor jet change.

I would suggest not doing the conversion. By the time you get the small propeller installed to get the RPM needed for 75HP it's too small to pull the plane around. That's why not many planes were equipped with that engine.

It requires different valves, pistons and small pins using a different small end bearing and drilled rod caps.

If you want better performance install the C85 using the Aeronca Service Letter.

The A75 is marketing horsepower, don't waste any time or money on it.

Bill Pancake has an STC cost 300.00 no parts just paperwork, keep your small tail, my opinion not to offend, in some FISDOS it’s a log book entry, check out the TC I,did the firewall brace mod and reworked the engine baffling, also installed the oil filter mod,but still pull the screen on oil changes, I really like the 75-12 performs well, plenty of power, with a wood prop, the CG is a little forward, I also installed a Lipo Battery 3 lbs 4.5 with the battery box on the fire wall, expensive battery, but if properly maintained will last for years. Planning on Becker radios comm and transponder expensive, but required with a gen or Alternator, some 337 work here, but I think worth it. LSA at a planned weight of 1312 pounds, even with the Delco pull starter, my favorite, again not to offend just my opinion.

Brink,
The conversion is for the A series engines. The benefit just doesn't outweigh the problems.

Paul what problems are you talking about,I do understand your in California, I am in Texas, you might say we are in two different worlds, my FISDO and your FISDO even compared to Our MIDO are Worlds apart, I enjoy the $100.00 burger as much as anybody else, I have DFW, Carswell, Love, and 6 other Control tower fields including my old training field of American Flyers out of Ardmore Oklahoma. I was a C-130 and turbo jet Engineer for 40 plus years, hey it was just a J O B nothing else. To me it’s a piece of cake, I do have an Icom, portable but the range is really short, compaired to a Becker, and I will admit their transponder is ridiculous in price. But still required, I fly day VFR only and usually find a hotel at 1 hour before sundown, hey I enjoy your post, and everybody else’s have a nice turkey day, Pancakes STC also covers the C models, lots of variations their, how Bill did It I will never know, my hats off to the guy, A fellow aviator

Brink,
The A75 has to run at a very high RPM to get the 75 HP. The fuel burn is near 6GPH. To get the added RPM you need a little DM series prop that can't pull the little Champs around. So to get the 75HP you get an added fuel burn of about 2GPH and a decrease in airspeed of about 5MPH. Not a very good reason for me to swap.
There are some good and bad FSDO offices, as well as ASI's. One of the biggest problems is the mechanics determination of Major/Minor repairs and alterations. If the modification confirms to fit the definition of the Major, that what it is. If it doesn't fit the definition it's a minor. Don't read anymore into the repair than it contains.
