Paul. just sold an Ercoupe with the plug shielding you are referring to, that is where I got the idea. I will contact Fresno Air Parts tomorrow. Thanks for the input! The Ol' Lyc just keeps purring but sure puts out a lot of static. Rod

Rodney,
They can make you up a harness if you need. They were also overhauling the lunchbox Bendix mags at about $450ea. I was there a few months back and the mags looked real nice, factory fresh. They have all of the parts for these mags.

Had my Bendix mags done by SAVAGE MAGS, came back looking like new. I have 3 1/2 inches from the spark plug hole to the cowling. I am trying to get a shielded spark plug and connecting harness into this space with out rubbing or "grounding out" on the cowling. I just don't want to cut a hole or form a "bubble" for clearance in my near perfect 1941 original cowling. Rod

Rodney,
Al over at Savage does a great job with the mags, you won't have any problems. The shortest plugs I can think of are the REM37BY extended nose plugs and the 62S plugs. Both are pretty short but may not allow for the harness to hook-up. That's usually the problem. The Ercoupe cans lets the wire attach on the side and buys you a little more room.

Just spoke with Fresno Air Parts. They do have the shielded spark plug cups. $47.50 plus per cup. They require a 1 3/8 " space between the cooling fins around the spark plug--not sure if this will work on the 0-145 Lyc but will measure to make certain. Other suggestion was to move antennae farther away from the source of the static (engine ignition), maybe tail or wing tip?? Any ideas on this?

Rodney,
My Tandem has unshielded plugs and it has some back round noise but the Com always comes through. I always use shielded wire for the mag switch because it's closest to the radio gear. Only ground the wire on one end so you don't get some weird induction thing.

Paul, hate to sound dumb at this point but I don't understand the "only ground the mag at one end" in your post.**As in: R mag and L mag shielded wire to mag (Both-L-R-off) switch then one single shielded wire to grd? I am presently using a hand held KX-99 for comm, I can almost tell the RPM.s from the buzz. Currently my mag to plug wires are good wire but unshielded as is the wire from the mags to the mag selector switch to grd. Rod

Rod what Paul meant to say was only ground the shield of the mag wire on one end (otherwise you create a loop that induces more noise).

You hook the center conductor of the shielded wire to the mag switch and mags as you would normally wire them.

Just one end of the shielding. The conductor will be hooked to the mag on one end and the switch on the other. If you run audio wires with power wires you will induce a hum in the audio.

Just found FAA approved mag filters that claim to eliminate ignition noise?? Any knowledge of these filters actually eliminating ignition noise--I have known of filters such as these working on cars with coils and distributors that eliminate ignition noise on AM radios. Rod

Rod are you talking about the filters used to eliminate alternator whine or have you found something else? What is the model number of the filter?

The filter is attached to the mags. Spruce has them. FAA approved! 52 bucks a peice. My Comanche was hit by a CAR last week so I am busy with insurance at the time. I am trying to buy a PA-28-200 Arrow to replace it. My son is also having a baby, my first boy, I have 6 grand girls, so you can see I am currently to busy to worry about a little static but I will get back to you==thanks for the interest you have shown! Congratulations on the grandson. I know of a Comanche begging for a new owner. It is out of annual, but rumored to be available for under $12,000. Don't know anymore beyond contact information of the IA involved with it.
