This Champ was formerly owned by Ron Babos, one of our very active members until several years ago. Glad to see its found a good home but also hope that everything is ok with Ron.

I apologize for digging up an old thread, but I saw the landing light on the wing and would like some more info, if anyone knows anything about legal lights in the wing, it would be appreciated.

Thanks, Josh

Josh,
About the 7DC, and later electric Champs, they started installing lights in the wing. Most I have seen are O/B of the strut, but I guess you could install them anywhere on the leading edge.

So they are a factory item? If so, what do you think the best way to get a hold of one would be? The factory landing light behind the prop on a Citabria is one of the dumber things Champion did, and making it go away would make me very happy.

Thanks,
Josh

Josh,
Find a set of 7EC or later wings and they will have it installed. If you plan to use the ribs they were a little thinner and require PK screws. The early Citabrias used this rib into 1965 possibly later.

Does installing the landing light require different ribs on either side of the light, or could I just install the light into my leading edge? I would think with the profile of the wing being the same it could be made to work fairly easy. We were looking at modifying a cessna (because we have some) landing light to fit, but I would think an Aeronca light would be easier to get approved. Lighting the prop up at night just does not do good things for night-vision.

Josh,
On the Citabria the rib placement varies with the model you have and the tanking installed. If you have a salvage yard near see if they have a light assembly. I'm sure it would be an easy installation.

Nose cowl landing light installation also has a tendency to limit bulb life dure to vibration--have changed a few on Cessna 182's with the installation. Not a good deal--it did not last long with them.
