brackett air filter for 85 champ

Post by Richard » Sat Sep 24, 2011 18:27

Is there a brackett air filter for the 85 champ? My IA told me, I would have to get a C-150 airbox to install the filter that I purchased. I have one on my pre-war.
Thanks Richard

Richard,
To my knowledge the Brackett air cleaner has never been 'approved' for a the C85 and the Champ airframe. Having said that, there are a lot of Brackett filters on Champs. Mostly they are adapted to the Aeronca airbox using aluminum angle irons (don't ask me how I know this  ). I have heard of a few field approvals that have been granted but never seen the 337 paperwork. It seems if you used the Cessna 150 airbox it would cause problems getting proper projection through the nose bowl in the available hole.

Thanks Mike. I know on the 108 stinson brackett filter, you remove the old maze filter and install the brackett foam and metal pieces in the old unit.

Brackett in 1990s had kit to convert the Aeronca airfilter to their foam one. It had a
metal screen to go in back, a metal grid to put on the front, bolts, nuts and a foam element. It
included a 337 so you could go to the FSDO with a matching installation. Pretty easy
and it used existing holes. Cessna 120/140 tech.

Last word I had was that they were still working on the Aeronca STC.

Brackett does not seem to be comming through with a legal solution. Adapting the Airmaze box with screens front and back would fool most inspectors. Wouldn't mind seeing pictures.
My Airmaze has held water after a night outside a couple of times, and given ice at about rotation even after an agressive run up with heat on.
I remember each time it has happened.

Hello Flyers:
I spoke with Scott at Brackett last week, The Brackett Continental filter should be in the works, production Mid Year. 2012. If you need a temporary unit call Scott, and they will run a kit to you, to mod the Airmaze. and yes a 337 is required, not that big of a deal, I think the kit is in the 60 dollar range + shipping. They don't do credit cards, so when you get the kit, please don't procrastinate, send him the money that day, and hopefully we will get the 2012 delivery date. your payment will help that happen!!!! Scott did a run for the Stinson L-5 and I bought one , It's a great!!!!! filter. I am looking forward to the new Continental unit, it will be worth the wait. A fellow flier Sunny

That's good news. Do you have Scott's number, so I can order a filter?
My 65CA has a brackett filter, and it is on the appproved list. I don't understand why the 11AC and 7AC aren't on the approved list.

All the A65 to C90 equipped aircraft models on the Brackett approved model list use the Continental manufactured airbox P/N A40522. The 11 series and 7 series Aeroncas used an Aeronca manufactured airbox P/N 4-601. The two airboxes are similar but not exact duplicates. The Aeronca airbox was not used in the certification process for the STC so any aircraft that uses it did not make it onto the approved model list. jrh

Hi Richard:
No, It's at the hanger, My computer system is at home. The airmaze was the only filter that the Brackett was suppose to work in. But I have seen the Aeronca, just like the airmaze but the lower part of the face plate had a small lip on it. I will get that number for you on Friday. I thought I would have it by now I mean the Kit, Scott was sending me. may be tomorrow, or Saturday, that is all I need to run my C-75-8, I just about have my right wing frame done so I will start covering in a couple of weeks. maybe this heat will go away so I can start Painting again, Just been doing small parts, I cracked the lexan on my door so I need to start over on that, Just one of those things. Hello Flyers:
Well the Brackett Kit arrived today, BA-154 Kit is set up for the( 2-849 Aeronca) and the (Airmaze 13204). The element is the BA-154-E, It came with the instruction sheet only, and parts to assemble the unit. no certs or 337> I think Scott knows I have it on hand. No billing either, So I will send 62.95 USD that is what the last kit costs that I ordered. Phone number is 928-757-4005, Address is Brackett Aircraft Company, Inc. Kingman arizona 86401. When you run the 337, be sure to include a section for continued airworthyness. Very important!!!! and of course in clude all of the steps 1-8 included in the kit. Good luck. A fellow Flyer Sunny

I just got the Brackett foam filter kit to install in my airmaze housing and will apply for field approval. My IA suggested I find a 337 for the modification that has been approved by the FAA and submit it with my application. Do any of you have an approved 337 I could get a copy of to include with mine?

Thanks,
Jim
