Bill,

The photo vanished??? Did you change it on your website? When that happens it drops it off of this bulletin board.

Louis,

The extended tanks are showing "mid process now" on Burls site. Sure wish that he would get them done in time for me to fly to Middletown!

Hi louis
I got it from EI (electronics International) ; it was about $600 but I think it's worth it to me...I can keep an eye on flow, and also it keeps a running total, even from one flight to another.
Leaning really makes a difference...from 10 plus down to 7 plus gph... so now I need to make sure I'm not cooking anything.
"down 'til it stumbles then plus a little' would be good enough for me...never leaned the P&W's below 5000 feet and never got up to 5000ft...
Except for bad weather and having to turn back I don't feel like I'll need the aux tanks (can't get them for a while anyway !).
In the summer the extra gas cans go in the float compt.'s
Last time I drove by Toad River Lodge I made a point of going inside...also looked over the runway...and the place has good accomodations and food and the strip is 3000 ft now.
So I feel pretty cocky now....that's about half way between Watson Lake and Fort Nelson, and always been my tight spot, especially since it goes up through the mountains or out over the flats...so that would make that stretch only 200 miles.

Until i quit working, it was always winter...so you know what that's like!
Short days and below zero!!
Coldest for me was in the old Travel Air; 44 below zero in the morning and no cabin heater...but 25 below by noon and 15 below up in the inversion at 1000 ft., kids in sleeping bags....after being stuck in Watson Lake for three days.
Long time ago!
Now I'm an old guy I'm waiting until April !!

When I heard "500 to 800 mile hops" I cheered up!
Only need 400 mostly...so that allows for turning around...and Toad River is open year around.

I've got new tanks now...bringing the plane home from Chicago took me 40 hours and I landed 22 times !?!
6 point egt/cht will be another $700...but I'll be able to do it without worrying, and that's what I'm looking for!
Bill

Joe...
I asked my website friend to put that pic on the website...so maybe that threw it off; I'll check with him and let you know when it's back on.
Thanks
Bill

Hi Gang
I finally flew it today; the weather didn't let me get very high and cruise it back...
#4 was the warmest on both CHT and EGT....not by a whole lot, but at least I could pick one to leave it on, and then to lean to.(Low 1300's down to low 1200's)
I was at 2500 ft.; 2350 RPM and 23 inches ...it leaned to just about 7.5 gph .
That was 'lean it until it stumbled and then add a smidgeon'...could see that it would lean more and even cool down a little , but don't want to do that just yet and maybe never...stayed 'rich of peak'
I think it will come down more with a decent cruise altitude, of course.
Been years since i leaned below 5,000 feet , because mostly it's been years since I got above 5,000 feet !?!
Truthfully, I don'r know what temps to expect...It was about 35 to 40 degrees F, and... leaned...temps were CHT 285F and EGT 1325 F; I could have leaned it a little hotter...was at least down 50 deg. from peak.
Even if it never gets any better that would be a reasonable 4.5 hours...an improvement.

With more altitude I'm looking for in the 6+ gph area, and 8+ something if I go to 2450.
When i get a chance I'll get it up to where I can run at full throttle and see what it does.

Never flown 170's or 172's so not really all that familiar with this C145 engine.

Any thoughts??
Is that cold, or warm, or pretty much okay ?
figuring about 105 MPH, prop is McCauley 7651...

Good to hear.

Boy, 7.5 gal/hour would be a dream with my running 10+ an hour.

Keep playing with it and let us know how things go.

Joe, there's something wrong if you are burning ten gallons an hour, with any kind of effort towards leaning...

I promise you!

especially as you are so much above sea level where you are.
Better take another look at everything...

PS: I hope you noticed my correction to my last comment last night to the "Champ at overgross" discussion.
Woke up this am, thought about what i had written and jumped up to correct it!
It concerned ' where 3 people in a seaplane sedan at gross should sit'...

Bill

Joe,

At one time, I had a 172 with the 0300. It burned right at 8 gal/hr most of the time. I agree with Bill, at 10+, there has got to be a problem somewhere.

Bill your temp numbers seem right on. Fuel burn sounds good; we saw 8.2-8.4 (at 2500rpm) regardless of altitude.

Thanks guys...
I'm going to figure 8 gph, as a basic number.
Thats right around 2400 rpm; around 2300 gets me around 7.5 and 105 both directions(no wind up there today but COLD !)

full throttle at 6500 feet it was sitting on 2450 rpm and a little over 22 inches and leaning to 8.5 gph

By then #6 was the hottest ...at other times it was #2...

I also wrote down " 8.5 gph 2500rpm 24inches "...think I was at 5,000 ft., full throttle and leaned.

As I get a chance to fly it a little more and can count gallons and get used to playing with the mixture, I'll get better with it.

Still don't remember what to lean it to; smooth engine and 50 degrees below peak (rich side) or 25...??

Either will work; we use 40* Rich of Peak because thats what the engine liked.
