 Post subject: Keyed Ign Switch Tumbler

Have any of you guys who have converted to 180HP got your old 4 positionI(Non-Start) Ign Switch Tumbler and keys for sale? My switch is fine, but I never had the keys and when I took the tumbler in to a locksmith, they told me it was too worn out to rekey.

Just looked on Ebay and there were a couple there but did not see any that had keys with them.

I have a local parts supply shop that from time to time has good used switches (with keys!) and could look there if that would help.

That would help if its a match to the old one. The switch itself works fine, but Idont want to have to switch my mags with a screwdriver, and the wire bundle comes right into the switch cover which is sealed. I have been watching Ebay too, none of the ones I have seen are matches and they are all complete switches, not just the tumbler portion.

Dik,
I have a Bendix p/n 10-357290-1A with key. It has thee terminals on the back for attaching wires. It has OFF, R,L, BOTH.

[/img]My Sedan parts manual lists the Aeronca number as 2-1453. I think that is the complete switch. I was hoping to find just the lockset and keys since the actual switch is still good. Also, it is sealed and I cant tell how many terminals are inside but the one you are talking about has all the positions I need.

Any chance of taking a picture of it? I will try to attach two views of my part here. Most of the guys who have converted to 180Hp have probably replaced theirs with a switch that has a start position on it.

Thats the same mag switch that Gareth Gilson has in his Sedan, Sn 067 or so.

I would pick up a new switch. Most of the used are just used-up. Some have AD's and it just isn't worth the worry. I just licensed an Ercoupe with the same switch and it failed in the off position.

Just an update. I finally discovered why I wasnt getting any help from the local locksmiths. They were under the mistaken impression that they would be opening themselves to lawsuits for liabilitity if they touched an airplane part. Lawyers follow paper trails and if there isnt a logbook entry or a data plate there probably isnt enough trail to follow. Anyway, I went back to the locksmith who had told me that the tumbler was too worn out to rekey and told them it was for an old welder, guess what, they replaced the tumbler and made the keys and my ign switch is alive and well. I dont like lying to people, but when faced with silly superstitions, I can ask for forgiveness later.

I never say the word airplane around folks when trying to get things fixed. Old tractor, antique car and so on usually get it done and for a reasonable price...

JoeA I do the same....old tractor story. I wonder how much real exposure there is for a non-aviation shop that knowingly work on a key set, or alternator, etc., over and above their normal exposure. Is it signicantly real or just perceived. Or is it just people running scared from our tort system.
