Wing Tanks for A Chief

Does anyone know if there was a model of the Chief with one or two wing tanks rather than the back Aux Tank? Service Letter for doing this or know of an STC?

Thanks, Bob

Re: Pre-buy and Inspection on Aeronca L-3B

I agree on the stress cracks as well as rust and corrosion, one place to check for sure is under the door frame coverings. Another thing I found out the hard way is that there can be cracks in the wood spars that are impossible to see without a major inspection process. A mechanic that I use got a s...

Re: Pre-buy and Inspection on Aeronca L-3B

Find a mechanic that knows Tube and Fabric Airplanes and hopefully specifically Aeronca's. They will know what to check in a pre-buy. Doing and inspection of 70+ year old aircraft with fabric covering is much different than a more modern aluminum monoplane. so find the right A&P. If you look up TBOs...

Re: CT,MA,RI,NY,NJ Members?

Yep ........... That is me. I owned a Cessna 140 and was very disappointed with its lack of performance. If you decide on one, I suggest you look at the Rag Wing models, which have better power to wing loading, but make sure that the fabric is in good shape and like any fabric plane it is best to ha...

Re: CT,MA,RI,NY,NJ Members?

I live in Manhattan and Sag Harbor, New York and keep planes at East Hampton, Warwick and Orange County (NY) airports as well as a seaplane in Fort Edward, New York.

Where in Connecticut are you?

Re: Pros and Cons for Champ recover please !!!

Once the old covering is off, there are a lot of places to look and see how much else you really should do before recovering. As pointed out, after 45 years there is a lot that could have been damaged that can not be seen in annual inspections or in the course of normal maintenance.

If you don't get a response, contact Kiffen Jones. He moves Aeronca's all over the country.

Re: 7AC w/Lycoming 0-235C1 for 0-320 ?

One thing I wouldn't do is add that much horsepower (0-320) if the plane was not recently rebuilt and all the steel etc. checked. I have seen too much hidden corrosion in Aeronca's that I have owned to be cavalier about that. Also keep in mind the required spare inspection openings or special inspec...

Re: 7AC w/Lycoming 0-235C1 for 0-320 ?

My experience is that with 115 HP (o235 / Don's Dream Machine etc.) and a seaplane (climb), prop you will probably do fine, just don't overload the airplane.
