Flat cut o-rings for old Imperial Valve

Post by RRHaldeman »

I have two Imperial valves on my upgraded C-85 Champ. Both were filled with "gunk". Took them out, cleaned them up, put them back together and used toothpaste to lap the valves. One leaks, the other does not. The leak appears to be out the stem of the handle. I suspect I need a new O-ring that seals the stem of the handle; the ring I removed has a square profile (commonly called square-cut, lathe cut, or square ring). In the profile view, the old O-ring has a rectangular shape. I tried to find a "donut" o-ring that will fit, but the height of the old o-ring is about twice as high as the new o-ring. Does anyone have a source for the flat-cut o-rings?

What I use is a product used for sealing valve stems, it looks like a square rope. McMaster Carr or a good industrial would have it. I will get the name from the hanagar today. Same idea they use for packing rope in the oleo strut.
