Champ Aux Tanks installed i/a/w Aeronca Drawing 7-1001

Post by RRHaldeman »

I'm removing two triangular shaped 6 gallon aux tanks from one set of wings and installing them in another set. I have a PDF file of Aeronca Drawing 7-1001 which appears to be the correct drawing. The aux tanks fit just inside the drag wires, supported by a wood sheet; but my mechanic and I (a) cannot get enough information off the drawing to really understand the installation and (b) we probably need a cleaner drawing. Is there anyone familiar with the triangular Aeronca aux tank installation, or someone who has pictures, or someone who may have a cleaner drawing? I did take photos of the original installation but there are sufficient discrepancies for us to believe that the original installation was not exactly per the drawing.

Dick,

What is the number on the drawing? Will see if I have one in our collection.

Dick,
I have a NOS L16 wing with a tank in it. I'll go take a look and let you know whats in it. It will be next week, I have a road trip to do this weekend.
Remember that engineers make the drawings and the mechanics make it work.

Got them both and one of them is much clearer than the one I had. Sure appreciate your help. For others who read this, anyone with experience on how to install the triangular 6 gallon wing aux tanks using 7-1001, I'd like a chance to discuss it with you.

I know it's been over a month from the original question; but here are a couple pics from Lloyds L-16.

I installed the 13 gallon tanks on my plane and the installation is quite similar. One word of caution that I got from Bill Pancake. Be sure to fill the tank completely full of gasoline before you begin covering the wings and let them set for a few hours. It's much better to find any leaks before the covering goes on.

When Joe sent the drawing to me, I downloaded it and found a local place to print it actual size. Cost $5.75. Once it was blown to actual size, it really helped. Thanks, Joe.

looking at what I can make of 7-1001 it looks like they took a butt rib center section and added it for reinforcement, while cutting out an entire rib center section to make room for the tank. On the other hand it looks like the L-16 has a butt rib added in its entirety.
Thanks for the pictures.

I'll be installing one of these and need all the help I can get. :)
